    Description

In an award in the Civil Aeronautics Board's Great Lakes - Southeast Case, Air Mail Route 54 was extended from Cincinnati, Ohio to Detroit, Mich., via Dayton and Toledo, Ohio. Service was inaugurated on January 1, 1959.
The Post Office Department provided map-type official cachets (inscribed “AM-8” in line with current United States Post Office policy of designating all routes flown by an airline by the lowest route number operated by that line) at all points and also at Toledo. However, Toledo was never served on Air Mail Route 54 and covers bearing the cachet were later returned to collectors uncancelled.
